Ethical clothing. Fair trade. Organic cotton. Sweatshop labour. All words we've heard strung together and often put in sentences to make us feel guilty about our consumption. The guilt is often swept aside once another cheap and disposable clothing purchase is made, and not thought of again in most cases.
Why is this? I spoke to a Fairtrade certified retailer in my hometown of Carlisle a couple of weeks ago, and she showed me some interesting statistics. The month of the Make Poverty…

If you have lived an awfully privileged life, you will never know the value of anything because you have never needed to. That goes without saying. But if you have lived a moderately privileged lifestyle, nowadays, you can still never understand the value of anything.
By anything, I mean materialistically. A friend said to me upon returning from a trip from Kenya, "I could live there. You get so used to not having material possessions, it's like you never had them in the first…

I’ve been accepted onto the MA in Ethical Fashion!
Never thought I’d be running my own company and be a student at the same time. But it’s actually the best idea ever. I can literally learn on the job. It’s like starting a company up with backing from the whole Dragon’s Den, but without the snide-y comments and demands for 90% of your company for 10% of the investment you want.... I’m more excited than I can say!
I’ve spent years agonising over the future and now it seems…

First entry,
I have never written a blog before, but fancy the idea as i enjoy keeping a diary.
I guess it will be about me, An emerging designer based in the South West of England and my exciting career launching a sustainable womenswear business and the challenges and hopefully successes it presents.
Currently frantically sewing the last few garments to complete my 18 garment collection. better late than never, but the launch is September!!! cutting it fine!

As a new member to this forum, I would like to share something that has been suspected by many but lay entirely hidden in plain sight. That something is the vast and growing network that supplies partners, support and a market for aspiring green brands – including sustainable fashion brands.
I discovered this network in the process of interviewing America’s top green business leaders for
my new book. Very few of these…

Affiliate systems are one of the best ways of increasing sales on you online store. They are systems that track "referrals' to your e-commerce website from other sites, and reward the sites that send you customers by giving them a percentage of the sales profit. IF you have great products, these systems have the potential to increase your sales many many times over.
Examples are

Today, I am ecstatic to report that the non-profit wing of The Andean Collection, aptly named, "The Andean Project"** has decided on its first project. A little while ago I received a phone call from Sarah, our intern in Ecuador, who was concerned about a situation arising in Olga's family. Olga, one of our lead artisans, is the oldest of a very large family. Sandra, one of her younger sisters, is 13 and has just finished elementary school.…

So the lush cord has arrived. I didn’t know it was possible to get this excited about what is basically posh string but i’m literally leaping about, jumping for joy. The last piece in the puzzle of the seemingly never-to-be-completed sample.
I’ll have my first glance at my ‘baby’ next week. I honestly can’t wait. It’s almost more than i can bear! I’m hopeless at surprises and queuing (which is really just waiting with other people around to watch you getting stressed isn’t it?). And…

After last week’s mini catastrophe, I think this week’s been rather a success. I have managed (a) not to destroy my computer; (b) not to destroy my poor, lovely husband’s belief that I’m basically a good person; and (c) to find something more fabulous than the fabulous cord I lost. Any one of those things is frankly cause for celebration in my book.
It’s funny how things can turn on a sixpence (or a euro, or whatever it should be now....). After convincing myself it was all over, I…

Bamboo is touted to be a sustainable fabric, yet it must be highly processed with large chemical or mechanical inputs to create soft fabrics. Instead, we found a much
more sustainable way to use bamboo: harvest it in ways that you can continue to harvest over long periods of time, soak the bamboo, then peel the skin and weave it into
baskets.
I just posted a new video on TAMMACHAT's YouTube Channel:
Weaving Organic Bamboo Baskets in Laos:…
