Kenema & Co alongside Inspirational YOU present The First Lady.
In November 2010 Kenema & Co and Inspirational YOU are organising an alternative festive shopping experience called, 'The First Lady'. This must attend event will take place at the Queen of Hoxton, 1-5 Curtain Road, London EC2A 3JX, United Kingdom on Sunday 28th November.
This is an inclusive open house event that promotes and supports products, goods and services targeted at women.
Kenema & Co (www.kenemaco.com) design contemporary clothing using African fabrics made in Sierra Leone using the skills of tailors and seamstresses giving them fair pay for their work. They are also embarking on charitable projects in Sierra Leone in conjunction with the Fifty-Fifty Women's Group (www.fiftyfiftysl.com). At their last event Kenema & Co were able to raise funds to sponsor the education of two girls for a year.
Inspirational YOU (www.harmonyfoundation.co.uk) are a voluntary organisation that empowers and supports women and vulnerable young people. They work with women who are at a crossroads and want support and guidance changing their lives.
They are currently looking for up and coming designers to exhibit and sell at this event that represent a cross section of women from High Street to Couture including clothing, accessories, jewellery, home ware and beauty products. There will be live music performances, a beauty treatment by Minx nails (London Fashion week and Lilly Allen), guest speakers including a stylist who will be featured in next September’s Vogue magazine, a nutritional therapist and MUCH more.
This event will also assist them in fundraising to purchase a moped for district midwives to use to access remote parts of Sierra Leone to support women during childbirth and offer antenatal care.
The First Lady will be held at the
Queen of Hoxton, 1-5 Curtain Road, London, EC2A 3JX,
from 11am – 5pm on Sunday 28th November 2010.
Tickets £2.00 in advance

We supply fair trade and organic cotton fabrics of all kinds throughout the EU and Australasia. We are in the process of producing both colour grown cotton fabric and bamboo woven and knitted. Do let me know if I can help. Phil www dot organiccotton dot biz

Hey,
im currently looking to find weavers in India who have great dye skills and can work with fine silks to create contemporary woven scarves??
If any one has any contacts, or knows of co-operatives, or fair trade weavers and communities I could contact, and to hopefully visit and work with, it would be amazing if you could get in touch!!
Many thanks

Holly

gday - the bonus of using an agent is that they handle the whole process including shipping - all textiles have different codes & you get your customs back i seem to remember via vat - personally i would use an agent but thats just me - i dont think it was overly expensive but i guess it depends on how much you are brining in - ciao
i think i used WTSeaAir.com

Thanks Ellen, I've heard now that UK import tax is 8% plus VAT which is 17.5% here plus handling fees (don't know how they are calculated yet). I think it's something I could do without a broker - especially as it'd just be a couple of consignments a year. I'm very impressed about your refund - I like it when that happens! Thanks again.

Hi, Helen. I can't give you advice for the UK, but we have a lot of experience importing textiles into Canada. We downloaded the tariff code PDF from the Canadian government (I believe it's 1900 pages!), found the textiles we import and do our own customs brokering. It's legal (i.e., you don't need to use a broker here), but frankly, the system is certainly not set up to accommodate people like us doing it ourselves. Importing textiles is quite complex, especially when you are dealing with products that contain multiple fibres, etc. We've even had to apply for a ruling after our last declaration because we were sure that the agent at customs was wrong when she said we had to pay duty on handwoven textiles from Laos (which we paid, but now will get a refund because we were right!). So it costs more to hire a broker, but if you don't have time or interest in learning the ropes yourself, that is a way to go. If you want to do it yourself, you can learn.
