Beatrice
i think we would all welcome any info that the East African Designers have to share with EFF. If any of you would like to post promo pieces, please go ahead. I think I talk for us all saying the more we know, the more we can network for future endeavours!

Hi Ida,

I would love to meet you if your East Africa includes Nairobi, Kenya and if your time allows. I'm sure the East African designers on ethical fashion network would love to give you information about this region as requested by members on this blog.

.... there is so much that East Africa has to offer ... and yes, for own and those willing and able to pay for it.

Hi Renato,

Ok that makes sense. I have found that inspite of the rhetoric it is very hard to get UK retailers to get interested in Africa and if I am wrong I stand corrected. Individuals that I come across tell a different story, they like African fashion and accessories but that said msot are reluctant to pay the premium that comes with handmade sustainable fashion

This Forum run an event to do with sourcing from Africa earlier this year and there was not a single African fashion producer on the panel of speakers. There was no promotion of what fabrics are out there in africa and why folk here should be interested in them and instead we heard how Africans need to be educated etc. That was a missed opportunity in my mind

I would urge African governments to consider and promote the domestic market as Africans are consumers of fashion.

This would involve Africans being interested in African fashion (fabrics and textiles), it would also put restrictions on the importation of cheap imports from china as well as second hand clothing from the western markets that kills of local talent and industry.

I am sorry if I come across as a defeatist here but that is my experience

Hi Ida,
To add to your list, if you find a manufacturer for the Kenyan "kangas" (I think I spelled it right). And if you find any indigenous textiles, I would be interested in making that connection. Thanks, and safe travels.

Stage 3 of Tartans for Africa is the production of garments/accessories in bespoke cotton, woven or printed, for domestic markets and export. Please look out for any companies who can produce the cotton to my designs.

Thanks
