Event Description

FASHION+ HOW FASHION CAN CHANGE LIVES
SEMINAR & MARTKETPLACE: SPOTLIGHT ON AFRICARICHMIX, TUESDAY 18TH AUGUST 2009, 6pm-8:30pm

SEMINAR, 6:30pm
Why is the apparel industry in Africa so important?
As an example, in Kenya 30,000 people are employed in the apparel sector- each job generates 5 other jobs (Going Global, The Textile and Apparel Industry, 2007)

Fashion products and supply create a life changing opportunity for many of the poorest communities in Africa. The Africa Inspires project of the International Trade Centre, which facilitates sourcing from Africa for fashion, have secured sustainable employment for 1,500 African slum dwellers and an anticipated 15,000 jobs in 3-5 years.

This seminar focuses on the specific challenges and opportunities related to sourcing for fashion products from a range of locations in Africa. Through case studies, the event will give an insight into how different sourcing models , products and businesses have maximised benefits to communities and minimised environmental impact.

Colin McDowell, The Chair
Cristina Cisilion
, Founder of MADE
Rohit Kuthiala, Senior Consultant- Supply chain at Accenture

KiRette Couture is a revolution. And at its helm are creators Anrette Ngafor and Kibonen Nfi. Influenced by their passion for fashion and love for their roots, the duo weave traditional and contemporary styles to bring African sexy back to the street and catwalk.

Hatched in the New York chic bubble, KiRette Couture is mainly inspired by the "toghu" (also known as the Bamenda gown) - a colourful and intricately embroidered fabric typically worn, on special occasions, by the people of the North West and Western provinces in Cameroon.

Although the "toghu" cloth is KiRette Couture's signature fabric, designs will not be limited to it. In true edgy and funky style, this one-of-a kind label aims to create a new fashion language which transcends racial and cultural borders by exploring, experimenting with and fusing various textiles. Our sourcing and manufacturing arrangements span across Africa.

We are an ethical brand and specialise in tailored, handcrafted and limited edition pieces. All our products are reasonably priced.

UniquEco Designs

UniquEco Designs are supporting communities and helping the environment in so many ways in Kenya! Making them an unmissable company to speak to at the Africa event.

People in communities in Kenya are employed by UniquEco Designs to create beautiful and unique accessories made from recycled waste washed onto the shore. Products are then sold across the world and to local shops and craft-fairs. The sales generate income that allows the project to continually run so they can continue to employ over 150 people.

Beaches are cleaned of rubbish in the process while employees learn business skills. Communities in Kenya begin to see the rubbish around them has a value and people across the world are being educated on how we are polluting our oceans.

Make sure you visit UniquEco Designs Site to find out about their other projects.
