Is Bark Cloth the most sustainable fabric?

Posted on February 1, 2011 at 11:30 0 Comments

Bark Cloth (Lubugo in Luganda- which is the language spoken by the tribe that produces this cloth) is a non woven fabric made from the bark of the MUTUBA (MITUBA- PLURAL) Tree (FICUS NATALENSINS) and is produced by the Baganda tribe in Uganda. It was widely used in dress making and was widely worn by the Kings and queens of Uganda prior to the arrival of cotton which I think was introduced by Arabs or Indians.

The cloth is used widely in Uganda's Art and Craft industry, Traditional… Continue

Africa's fabrics - wild silk from Madagascar

When I tell people that Ethnic Supplies stocks fashion accessories made from wild silk one of the questions I get asked without fail is that

Is there enough for commercial purposes?

And the answer yes there is, in Madagascar. The best part is that there is a whole conservation project underway to protect Madagascar’s natural heritage.

Tapia, or Uapaca Bojeri, is the staple food of the wild Malagasy… Continue

Dear Ida,

I hope you're well.

We don't add email addresses to our mailinglist without consent - perhaps it was via the Source Expo last year, where we had a "join our mailinglist" document floating around.

I have already unsubscribed you, but to unsubscribe, visitors can go here: http://www.offsetwarehouse.com/email_unsubscribe.php

I'm terribly sorry for the inconvenience and look forwards to seeing you at this year's Expo.

Kind regards,

Yi.

we are open to using african print fabrics from elsewhere if there are no local options. basically our goal is to provide work for these women so our priorities:
1. provide opportunities to the women
2. ideally fair trade fabrics
3. ideally organic

(in that order of importance to us)

thank you for your help!

This picture is from kangas that we're bought from a vendor while we were in Burundi. He said that they were designed for export to Germany.

We really appreciate your help. The fabrics do not have to be exactly like this. We are just looking for some printed fabrics in coordinating patterns that we could create a baby collection from.

I will check back for photos.
