About me / About business or organisation:
I’m an interaction designer / developer / researcher currently in the final stages of a PhD based within the Centre for Advanced Textiles at the Glasgow School of Art. By applying the skills, methods and tools of new media practitioners within the domain of textiles, the study explores how rich interaction technologies can be used in conjunction with existing design software and manufacturing hardware to develop an on-demand model for the production of digitally printed textile products. Essentially, I build retail / gallery installations that invite the public to create their own textile products by interacting with dynamic print designs that respond to physical gestures (based on generative algorithms). Aside from the environmental and economic benefits of this approach, the main focus of the practice / research is to explore the creative opportunities for design(ers) once production shifts from just-in-time to on-demand.
Career history / Company history:
Having been awarded a scholarship from IBM, I completed 4 placements with the company whilst studying for my Masters degree in Manufacturing Sciences & Engineering at the University of Strathclyde. My final year project involved the development of a process blueprint / business model for a T-shirt customisation website that manufactured garments on-demand using digital textile printing. This led me into a PhD at the Centre for Advanced Textiles where I am attempting to establish a more sustainable alternative to mass production based on the pre-industrial values of craft (rather than the those of fashion).

Hello Andy, I like what I'm seeing and reading and would love to get connected. How do you see your model working from a commercial perspective, or to be more specific, does what your working towards take the fashion designer out of the equation, in favour of software designers, or have I got this wrong?

I look forward to talking further.

Best Jason

Hi Andy, I got a bit lost after generative algorithims but what youre doing sounds like it would be ideal for me. One of your fellow students has invited me next week through to look at the digital printer and I hope to get a sample of one of my designs produced.
