Eco, Sustainable and Ethical options for Buttons - Any thoughts?

I am trying to decide what the best type of buttons to use are for my SS10 collection and wondered what other people thought -

Mother of Pearl/Natural shell - a natural resource so prob biodegradeable - but what harm do we do to the environment when getting the shell? is it a sustainable source?

Corozo - from nuts so is this biodegradeable once made into a button? probably sustainable?

Coconut - natural yes, but they look a bit hippy n'est pas?

or should I just use some organic cotton fabric covered buttons?

Hi I'm working with a great guy in Kenya that produces coconut buttons - I think with the right product they don't have to look hippy. Also have you considered covering them with fabric? I also work with someone that produces buttons from recycled glass - they are beautiful.

How about using Tagua at all? It is a natural ivory and can be coloured.

yes tagua is good but you can use bamboo buttons too which are sustainable. our clients are taking and using them in their garments.Another option is to use natural eco-friendly bone and buffalo horn buttons.they look exotic and nice too.

Please don't get me wrong, I strongly support your way of working as written above and I will contact you privately for more info. But could you please explain how buffalo horn is sustainable? What about the animals? In which conditions is is taken from buffalo? Kindly elaborate your point of view.

How about making buttons from something recyclable like bottle tops or foil sweet wrappers. By the way this is not my picture but I can't seem to change it!!!!!!
