I am working with an NGO called Alchemy world http://alchemyworld.org/ in Ethiopia which helps young Ethiopians start businesses. Some of our current students want to start a fashion business for both local and international markets. I am a mentor for them.
Career history / Company history:
Until November 2008 I was the Enterprise Director at the University of Westminster and had responsibility for the university’s enterprise strategy, commercialisation programme, company start-ups, knowledge transfer programmes, applied research and consultancy and other projects with business and industry.
In addition, I was an Executive Director of the WestFocus consortium of Universities comprises Brunel, Kingston, Roehampton, Royal Holloway, St Georges, Thames Valley and Westminster built around the combined enterprise, knowledge exchange and commercialisation resources and programmes of the group. My portfolio at WestFocus included the development and delivery of integrated, sector-based knowledge and business development networks. These are web-enabled knowledge networks operating across a range of sectors including ICT industries, life sciences, social inclusion and the creative industries.
I have provided consultancy services and strategic advice to a number of industry bodies including ‘Market Place’ which is the EU Media support programme, adviser to the UK Business Incubation body and adviser to Regional Development Agencies on New Media and related topics.
Prior to this I was the University’s Development Director for Business and Community and before then a Principal Lecturer at the University’s School of Media, Arts and Design. Teaching Photography and Digital Media. In the latter capacity Stephen was the course leader of the internationally regarded degree course in Film Video and Photographic Arts.
I was also for 8 (86-94) years an elected member of Lambeth Council and fro 91-94 the Leader of the Council.
Before joining higher education, Stephen was a professional photographer having graduated from Manchester College of Art and Design with a Diploma in Photography (first class) and a Diploma of Associateship (with distinction)

Hi Stephen, I replied to your email address a little while back but not sure if you received - looking again at your email address, not sure if it was correct?! Anyway, hope you are well and thanks again for taking the time to meet up before - it was very interesting to hear more about your work in Ethiopia (and Lambeth!). My email address is nicola.thornley@googlemail.com if you still want to send through those contacts.
Hi Stephen. I'm really interested in learing more about the work that you are doing in Ethiopia, particularly with starting up fashion businesses. I currently work as a product developer at Burberry but I'm planning a trip around Africa later this year to meet and work with ethical fashion producers as a sort of fact-finding mission before I eventually set up my own business. The main aim of the trip is to see how everyone is working (from small scale factories/workshops, to individuals, to development projects) and how we can work together to increase fashion production in Africa. Do you have any projects in work at the moment that would appreciate some help for a few months, or would just like to meet up whilst I'm on my travels?
Hello there Stephen,
I wokr in the naturla fibre industry in nepal and would love to know if there are people like you to helpin this country. hi stephen i am hoping to put on a competition/fashion show bringing together the work of african with european designers as a 1st project for my masters in ethical fashion i begin in sept - would love to talk to you about your students and work in ethiopia...let me know if you are free to talk at any point
Hi Stephen, thanks for getting in touch. I had a look at the photos on flickr. Great to see how you're developing young entrepreneurs...exactly what Africa needs. As for the group involved in making silver jewellery, would it be possible for me to see some of their work. If I could get more information on them, and if they are interested I could do some marketing for them through our website and existing network of retailers, and see how it develops.
Hi Stephen, my company Savannah Chic is working towards as system that enables African jewellery designers to showcase their talent at international trade shows. Have a look at our website if this sounds interesting to you. www.savannah-chic.com
