Looking for ethically-produced African fashion in beautiful cotton prints?

If so, Mayamiko Trust may be able to help!

Mayamiko Trust is a registered UK charity working to help people lift themselves out of poverty through skills training, education, nutrition, sanitation and fairer trade practices.

Mayamiko’s vision is to supply UK and worldwide wholesalers and retailers with high-quality, ethically produced African-made fashion and homeware.

We have created an ethical production unit in Malawi where we train underprivileged women in sewing and tailoring. Many of our trainees, especially women, are victims or care for orphans of the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

We use ethical labour standards, and work towards the World Fair Trade Organisation’s 10 Standards of Fair Trade. As well as training, we provide meals, bicycles, childcare for our trainees and graduates.

As part of our long-term vision, Mayamiko is working to establish sustainable sewing and knitting training schools. We wish to create orders for the highly trained graduates to make fashion for the export market, while supporting the threatened cotton industry in Malawi.

Our first range of childrenswear, homeware and accessories made in Malawi was designed in collaboration with Soko Kenya (www.soko-kenya.com) - the eco and ethical production unit founded by fashion label Lalesso. All garments are made in colourful cotton prints called 'zitenje'. Buttons and embellishments are made by local artisans with reclaimed wood and other recycled materials.
