Through skills training, education, nutrition, sanitation and fairer trade practices. Mayamiko works to support creative talents and turn them into sustainable activities. Mayamiko loves everyone, but has a special soft spot for the most vulnerable - women and children.

- *Equipment and Supplies – January 2009
Many months of work have gone into achieving this milestone and a lot of hard work from our volunteers. We are now overjoyed to say that we are 90% there! We are quickly filling a container with equipment given to us by generous donors. Each piece of equipment has been tested and is in good working conditions. Most machines run without electricity which is a great advantage for the type of environment we work in – where the supply of electricity is scarce and not very reliable.
We now have 12 professional semi automatic sewing machines donated by the Hitman Group in Italy, 2 linear knitting machines, supplies of fabric, wool, zips and buttons. We are aiming to source a third knitting machine and a 6-station silkscreen printing machine. We aim at gathering all equipment by early January 2009.
*Container shipment to Malawi – January 2009
Our local partners are waiting for the equipment to arrive so they can start training. Unfortunately we cannot teleport these heavy machines with the power of our minds… so we need a big container – and that’s expensive. We have quotes in the region of £7000 and are talking to shippers who may be willing to help. We are raising the £7000 we need over the Christmas season mainly through the sale of our calendar Pearls of Wisdom 2009 and we are relying on everyone’s support to achieve this objective. So far we have raised only a small proportion of what we need, but every calendar we sell takes us a little step nearer our objectives.
* Recruitment and begin training – February 2009, ongoing
As soon as the equipment is on the container starting its journey to beautiful Malawi, we will start recruiting local women to being training once the equipment has reached its new home.
There are some costs related to this: renting premises, watchmen to look after the equipment, the salary of the trainers, maintenance and some consumables. Training will last 6 months but we believe that in the second term the ladies will already be able to start selling some of their products on the local market and begin the cycle of sustainability. At the same time the ladies will be encouraged to take part to discussion sessions on life skills
We estimate that the cost of training each lady is in the region of £350. The ladies too will be asked to contribute a symbolic fee, to increase their sense of ownership of the project. We would like to begin with a group of 10 ladies. (£3500) At the end of each training course we hope to support the ladies to start their own small business or to join together in groups and cooperatives, or to become trainers.
Raising funds for training is our next objective for 2009.
* Mini-Mayamikans Program – March/April 2009
In parallel with the start of the training activities, we want to also begin supporting the ladies’ little ones. In Malawi 175 out of 1,000 children on average die before they reach the age of 5 (World Health Statistics). To give babies two healthy meals a day and to support them in their physical, social and mental development we believe we need around £200 per baby for 6 months. We know this can make such a difference to their growth and development. Our objective is to support a maximum of two babies for each lady who joins the Mayamiko Project. (£4,000)
Raising funds for training is our next objective for 2009.
* The House that Grows – October 2009
At the end of the first phase of training we will aim at assessing the impact of the project on all participants, on their family and on the community. We will then assess sustainability and scalability to establish the best way forward with the necessary adjustments and lessons learnt.
This will possibly lead to a repeat of milestones 3 and 4 and/or to a more holistic approach to create our own hub.
