The True Cost of Fast Fashion: Balancing the Scales

By Bianca Alexander

According to the Department of Labor, over half of the garment factories in the United States are sweatshops.  The popularity of sweatshops began at the turn of the 20th century, as consumer demand rose for trendy but inexpensive off-the-rack clothing.  Given the difficulty of mechanizing the clothing manufacture process, cheap human…

Case studies are making up the majority of my work.

If anybody would like to answer the post title question, it would be a huge, gigantic help to my work.

The question again is: What do you think are the main factors that prevent…

The Little Red Sewing Machine

Great jubilation today over the rescue of a woman alive after 17 days in the rubble of the Rana Plaza building in Bangladesh. But we also learnt that the death toll is now 1,021 and rising.

Shoppers want to support ethical traders, but everyone in the fashion industry says it is soooo complex, that it is almost impossible to follow the manufacturing chain when you have to look at not only the factories where the clothes are  made, but to the shippers, the farmers who grow the cotton,…

s Day and World Fair Trade Day on the same weekend

The Bangladesh  tragedy (which is now reporting more than 800 dead and 2,500 people rescued alive) has us all questioning what we buy, who produced it and what kind of businesses we are supporting. Celebrating the upcoming Mother’s Day and World Fair Trade Day on the same weekend has been more appropriate.

Mothers have a reputation of appreciating (almost) any Mother’s Day present, but this year they may look at their gifts at little differently.  What might have been considered a…

Ethical Fashion: How to Navigate an Industry

In the final part of this series with Eco-fashion pioneer Marci Zaroff, I wanted to turn to the question of what it will take to really change the textile industry, what regulations need to be instituted, and in what ways we can empower ourselves to navigate through the many contradictions of what is indeed, a very complex industry.…
