Hi everyone,

I just graduated from university in December and have been trying to find a way to break into the fashion industry from and ethical standpoint. I was lucky enough to come across a great organization that would help me get my career going in the direction I want, but I can't get there all by myself. Hi, Sarah!  I'm sorry for the late response.  I don't know very much about the downfalls of the cottage industry -- only that I'm not sure about the bargaining power of workers outside of a union-context.  The only exposure that I have to litigation around sweatshop issues is in the garment industry in east Asia -- not in India.   My organization, the Asian Law Caucus, has historically worked on behalf of garment workers on the West Coast and Asia, as has the Employment Law Center.  A better contact for this type of information is Bjorn, the ED at Sweatfree in the US.  Hope this helps.  Happy new year!  Veena

Hi Sarah, I once tasted Blue Ice vodka made from Idaho potatos. Wow! 'Ethical' must surely now be the most carelessly-used word in fashion. If no-one actually dies in the process from creating the fibres to getting a finished garment into stores its described as ethical, but its not much of an ethos in human terms. We really need to include a greater tranferrance of wealth
