About me / About business or organisation:
Edwina Assan is a Textile Designer by profession with several years experience. She graduated from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana in 1984 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Art with Textile option.

Edwina lives with her family in Tema.
Career history / Company history:
She has had extensive training in management not only in Ghana, but in South Africa and Niger to enhance her business. This has made it possible for her to run Edtex Limited, a company that she started as both Designer and Managing Director.

Her specialty is Batik production and her products include wall pictures, fabric and other home décor items such as tablecloths, table runners, place mats, napkins, bed sheets and other accessories.

Edwina has been involved in training different categories of people interested in batik production. These include refugees, religious women’s groups, wives of some diplomatic missions, and cross-cultural groups. She participated in Ma Africa a program that seeks to reward women who have excelled in their field in community development. The theme for the competition that year was ‘the preservation and development of indigenous arts and crafts’. She won the Ghana ‘Ma Africa 1999’. She represented her country in the international competition and also won ‘Project with Most Impact in the Community’ as well as the ‘Lakeside trophy’ for her contribution to her community.

She has also represented textile producers in so many local and international conferences.

The Ghana Tourist Board in 2008 voted her Museum Shop ‘The Retail Outlet of the year’ for the Southern sector which comprised of four of the ten regions in Ghana.

She has always been of the view that giving women employable skills is key in keeping stable homes and is the fastest way of reducing poverty. The biggest challenge however for those already in businesses and for those yet to begin in Ghana, is market.
