Hi David, thanks for the hello! Do you have a website? I'm just beginning in all of this but would love to keep you in mind. I'm living in Puerto Rico at the moment and if I am lucky to find a retail fabric store that has ethical fabrics...I will be very surprised. (But I am on an optimistic hunt!) I'm glad to have found this network and hope to learn more of what is out there and meet some great designers at the same time.

    Hi David,
am working on master's thesis - haven't gotten very far yet, but the working title is "CSR in the global fashion industry - marketing tool or actual effort?". So far I have gathered information on the fashion industry (volumes, trends, production & logistics), plus a couple of case studies of fashion companies that have (or claim to have) incorporated CSR into their business model.

Any input, suggestions as to case studies etc would be highly appreciated.

    Best,

    Kaja

The fabric we use are made from cotton that grows already coloured and hence the colours are earthy, creams, browns and light green. The material has a very soft feel and touch also has the advenatage of been kind to the skin as no artificial dyes are involved in the process.

Any more information please let me know.

What a fantastic company you have going! Sorry for the delayed response...
  • Dipti Irla

Hi David ... I will love to use them. There is one thing though. I have to get all the fabrics approved from my teachers. So I will talk to them and let you know. I personally love tartans and will see if I can include them in my collection. Thanks
  • Dipti Irla

Hi David. I see that your company is UK base. Do you have production in San Francisco also? If so, how can I see some of the fabric that you have.
  • Sass Brown

    HI David,
Small world, although it was my international experience of working with women's cooperatives in South America, as well as the fact that I am a European working for an American University, that likely led to my current position as Director of FIT's study abroad program in Florence, Italy, rather than the other way around. Unfortunately the demands of the position has severely limited my ability to travel to my cooperatives now ;-( So I can only hope that my path develops more like yours!

I love your quote above about using fashion to effect social change, I am in total agreement with that! I just got back from Glasgow, where I rediscovered my family tartan! I'll check out your site later!
  • Sass Brown

    HI David,
Now I know all Scotsman are insane ;-) I actually had originally intended to spend a few days in Edinburgh, but I have a friend in Glasgow at a University there, so thats where I ended up. I will ensure to visit Edinburgh next trip though, rest assured, especially now that I know it is twinned with the fair city in which I live! So now I know who modeled for Michelangelo, you must be very old! So are you using the McFarlane tartan, thats my family tartan! (my mothers side of the family are all from Motherwell)
  • Sass Brown

It never ceases to amaze me what a small world we live in! Motherwell, of all places! Let me know if I can help on any womens cooperative questions. I have worked for years with COOPA-ROCA in Rio, amongst others. Sass
  • Dipti Irla

    Hi David,
I have emailed you my address. I wanted to just check if you got it. I am excited to see your tartan samples
    Thank You

  • Sam Goates

Hi David, Had a look at your website, and happy to help if I can. What do you need to know?
  • gdelacruz

Yes, what is your project entails? thanks g
  • Sam Goates

Hi David. I am afraid I have relatively little experience in cotton though I did work with it quite a bit about 18+ years ago at a mill where I worked in Sydney. was pretty straightforward... much easier than wool from my point of view. If you want to talk through specifics of what you'd like to know I am happy to help if I can.
I don't know of many mills weaving cotton in the UK as I am only just starting to get a handle on the woollen mills. Were you hoping to manufacture in UK or thinking to source OS?
I see you have been corresponding with someone in India. There was an indian company presenting at the RITE conference last year... Shreyasker Chaudary from Pratibha Syntex who was introduced with great rap by Katherine Hamnett.
    http://www.pratibhasyntex.net/company-profile.htm
I see they only do yarn and knit... but given their credibility from invitation to speak at RITE, they might be able to point you in the direction of a weaver who uses their fibre/yarns.
    Cheers s.
  • Sam Goates

PS: Do you know about RITE Group? The conference is on early Oct... could be very useful for you.

Wool... I am all with you on that. But completely undertstand your rationale for looking at cotton. However.... soooo many questions!

. I'm guessing you are aiming for something like the second video.... but I wonder if these 100% handmade cloths are actually so expensive only the high end designers can afford them.
. are you wanting to have tartan cloths that can be worn by the locals?
. what price can they afford to pay?
. this might determine whether you can have artisan spun, dyed and woven fabric or need to source machine made yarn from elsewhere
. where are the fabrics that they wear currently coming from? I suspect, machine made in china.

. or are you wanting to have artisan produced tartan that can be made into other smaller items to sell... bags, cushions, tablecloths etc?
. to sell to whom... locals or tourists?

. most of the weaving I have seen from africa has been narrow looms, though the second video did show a wider width... tartans could lend themselves well to either narrow or wider width. The second video also shows there is a type of weaving done which allows for check patterns (warp and weft visible in equal amounts), which is good though whether you will be able to have a twill weave construction (usual for tartans) will depend on the type of looms available. That may not matter.

Anyway, I don't know much research you have already done and what technical info you need. There are a lot of issues in supply chain as well as the technical aspects of the weaving. But happy to help if I can.

Hey David, nice to meet you! I give a quick look to your page, it's interesting. Do you just design fabric or also clothing?
  • Charlotte Watkivs

Thank you very much for your comment, it is an interesting one that I will try to address in my project. I am also intrested in the company you work for. I have breifly looked at the website and was wondering what the whole idea behind giving them Tartan is? Does it improve their lives and is this fabric better than that they can produce themselves?
    Thank you
    Charlotte

Hi David, thanks for your message - I did my BA in Architecture and then worked for a couple of years. Now I am just going into my final year of an HND course in Textiles, and have started producing and selling some of my own printed textile work (blog link here). I had a quick look at your page and am really interested in the Tartans for Africa project. Is that linked to the current work you mentioned with the schools? Regards, Towera

  • Kirstine Mai Hassing

    Hi David,

Thanks for your comment. I've had a look at your webpage, and it'sreally interesting. I am currently placed as an intern for the Danish NGO MS in Dar es Salaam. And my job is to write a report on Social Economy and how MS can help promote it, and my approach is ethical consumerism, so Tartans for Africa is definately relevant.
Do you have more information other than what is on the webpage? Maybe I could run it by my supervisors here, and see if they could be interested in knowing more. I sure am.

    Best regards,
    Kirstine

  • Marlene Middlemiss

Hi David, I think you are correct in your statement about wool. I never really thought about it as sustainable but you are right. No animal dies, the wool is sheered off and God knows tartans have been around for ever! If you make kilts the fabric has no loss in the way it is cut also. Thanks for the insight! Marlene
  • Jean Elliott

    yes I do

Thanks for your comment, David. Regards, Mark
  • Giulia di Bitonto

thank you very much. I'm just starting my brand. I work from Italy at the moment. I'm trying to be from start as much ethical as I can. If you can advice some good suppliers of organic fabric or from sustainable sources in Italy or London or Glasgow I'd really appreciate it. Also I'd like to ask if you ever heard of 'ethical leather', i.e. leather from animal dead for natural causes.
    Thanks Julia
