Hi Charlotte. Tartan is traditionally a woven wool fabric associated with Scotland. Because of the way it is woven I can use the colours in a country's flag to produce an original and unique design with which the people of each country can identify. I produce a range of some 20 accessories + a ready-to-wear range of skirts and even wrapping paper. Those in the Tartans for Africa range are sold wholesale to schools churches ngo's and ethnic associations in the UK who retail them and retain the profits for their own project in each country. When I sell to individuals I set aside 10% to help set up busineses for African womens co-operatives. In due course I hope to get the cloth woven/printed in cotton in each country where they can make clothing/accessories. By using the tartans in fashion it helps to advertise African countries as individual and separate nations and not just 'part of Africa'.
