This is just to let you know about a project young volunteers in Cambridge have organised. Young designers (around 35) from universities and colleges have been sourcing their clothes from British Heart Foundation and Oxfam shops, with the aim of creating four collections, one for each season of the year. They have been doing this over several months with the help of local designer Nikki Goldup at workshops, and the outfits will be displayed at a show on the 7th July at the Junction, a well established venue in Cambridge, where they will be sold to raise money for the charities they came from. The clothes will be worn by volunteer models. The pictures will also be taken by young volunteers, although professionals have also lent their support and time to the event. Various designers have also been extremely kind and donated items for us to auction and raffle. The whole idea is to promote sustainable fashion and recycling, and we are still looking for guest speakers, places to source materials from that designers can use (so far we have managed on a budget of almost nothing, which has been a healthy healthy challenge) and general advice and tips from those involved in ethical fashion. So if you feel you can help us in any way, please get in touch! The project has snowballed and has recieved great interest, with up to 70 volunteers now involved in some way, and the entire concept has been planned and created by the young people involved. The aim is not only to promote ethical fashion, but to give them a platform on which to develop their interests and skills.
