Ever since I was a little girl, loved to crochet. Instead of watching TV or playing video games, I have always been more interested in the knitting and my mother’s mathematic games.
Surrounded by the nature of my hometown in S.Miguel, Azores Islands in Portugal, or by London artistic culture, my mind works in mysterious ways and translates images and experiences into geometric knits, crochet, embroidery and/or lace techniques.
My work is my passion, is having fun playing between new and old materials, appealing to the already known lost traditional arts in an innovative way.
Experimentation. Calculation. Adaptation. Structure. Transformation. Contrast. Creation. Fantasy. Dream. This is my work. This is my art.
Career history / Company history:
I, Susana Bettencourt, graduated in BA Fashion Knitwear Honours at the prestige's Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London.
I was part of the finalist short list for the Portuguese Young Creator 2008 with the collection "Tempus Morphose" while being an intern for 2 collections (AW08, SS09) at Alexandra Moura and doing a jewelry course at Contacto Directo (Lisboa). At the beginning of the year was part of an exhibition of Janela Urbana at Yron Galley with a handmade accessories collection.
Before that, in 2007, I started my working career at Treads & More (Australia) being part of the designers panel and a year before that at Fátima Lopes developing a merchandising project. With a fashion Folio Course at CSM and a Sewing and pattern course where I first purified my skills and will to succeed.
Recently I was invited for a MA Fashion Digital London College of Fashion which will give me experience with the new software from the computerized knitting machines to 3D projects and pattern cutting. At the moment the acrylic jewelry collection is in progress to be in the stores the next few months.
