The Alliance for Responsible Mining work for sustainable development in Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (ASM) communities. We have developed the FAIRMINED standard and certification system for gold that promote sustainable social, economic, labor and environmental practices in ASM communities producing gold. When miners reach FAIRMINEd certification they empower their comminities and recieve a fair price and an extra premium for their gold which is invested in community development projects.
Career history / Company history:
In 2004, ARM was launched by a network of independent organizations with the aim of promoting responsible standards and criteria for Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (ASM).We began our work with various organizations from different countries, drawing inspiration from the promising results achieved by the Oro Verde initiative in Colombia. In 2006 our first standard, Standard Zero, was developed and in the years that followed the standard was updated following consultation and workshops with the miners ‘organizations and a broad number of other stakeholders in Latin America. Our current standard the FAIRMINED standard for gold has been opened up to cover miners outside LAtina America as well. ARM has a project in West Africa with UNIDO.
