Collaboration in Fair Trade and African Design and Arts
About me / About business or organisation:
Dori and Michele, the minds behind The White Ribbon label have enabled their business to grow organically through sustainable and inclusive methods and they now produce some of the most charming and well-made ballet flats you will ever see.
Career history / Company history:
Their story starts in two separate countries with Dori drawing on her Hungarian roots and inheriting skills in sewing and shoe manufacture; and Michele on his Italian heritage and experience running social projects. Fast forward through some impressive studies in fine art, social development and international environmental law between them, and a move to Berlin, and the joint story commences.
Now The White Ribbon could be considered a mobile creative laboratory, with new production taking place in fair trade arrangements in Berlin and Budapest as well as in a new partner workshop in Marrakech which supports women in the workforce. Dori and Michele work closely with skilled artisans both inside and outside Europe with Dori taking a hand in sourcing materials, preparation and finishing work. Expanding their network internationally means an exchange of valuable resources which allows them to improve both their design and technique, drawing on centuries-old craftsmanship.
