What is the most sustainable way to print on apparel

I want to do some printing on some items but want to avoid any harmful material such as PVC, etc.  What is my best option?  Heat press and/or screen printing?

Any help or suggestions is appreciated!

Hi I have been printing garments using heat press vinyl now for 6 years and it is quite plastic heavy- ecological materials are not really available. Recently I have started screen printing and there is a lot of emphasis on water based inks these days, which are more ecologically sound plus are water washable so no harmful solvents required. We have opted for an ink called Permaset.  When fully set up, screen printing would probably have the least impact on the environment and allow for more eco-choices.
