Hi, the board is a spin game I designed for farmersown ltd of Nairobi. The key person there is a person called Jim Cheatle, a British national based in Nairobi. This game was exhibted at the fairtrade (then IFAT) conference at NewCastle in 2003 and it was very well recieved. I am a product designer with over 13 years experience working with artisans at community level and I am based in Mombasa working mainly as a resource person (consultant) for development organizations like NGOs and others. I do capacity building in product design and development, SME development, project evaluations, program support and we have a shop doing fruit juice processing where my office is housed.

My business is called Common interest and some of our clients include WWF, Actionaid, Danida, Association for the physically disabled of Kenya (APDK), etc. We are re in the same building with Actionaid coast region office in Mombasa. If you are interested in visiting projects, Actionaid works with 3 craft groups at the coast, there is bombolulu workshops, Akamba handicrafts cooperative, Malindi handicraft cooperative and a many others. If you choose, we can provide support in your tour by taking you around at a low fee. I have been supporting En-plus, a japanese craft business that belongs to a designer called Shiho who worked for people tree the largest fairtrade company in japan. Let me know if you need any help

Hi Nicola,
Great to hear about your trip - where exactly are you going? My experience is mainly Southern Africa. There are two books on craft in South Africa that may be good starting points:
'Craft South Africa: Traditional, Transitional, Contemporary' by Susan Sellschop, Wendy Goldblatt and Doreen Hemp
'Craft in South Africa' by Elbe Coetsee
I don't know of any projects looking for people at the moment, but I'm happy to give you any advice I can about travelling around Southern Africa if you want to email me sarah@sarahrhodesdesign.com

Dear Nicola,

Thanks for your enquiry. There are many producers in Africa that you can visit. My reach is within East Africa but I can still connect you beyond East Africa. Let me know what type of companies you are mostly interested in. Any special requirements? so that I can draw a list for you. Contact me through beatrice@sanabora.com

Jacquline - hi! Hope you're well?

Well, my plans are nothing concrete at the moment but I'm planning a trip some time from August. The plan is to do a little fact finding trip and to meet and work with suppliers/producers/projects, just to see how everyone is working and to make some contacts. I don't know where I'll be when yet but definately I'd be up for travelling together - like you say, it's not always so easy doing the travelling thing alone. My number is 07968 774949 - give me a call anytime. I'll keep you posted when I start arranging things.

Speak soon anyway.

Nicola..

(p.s. love the blog page!)
