Sseko Designs is an international footwear company that makes beautiful leather sandals with interchangeable fabric straps. The straps come in a variety of colors and patterns and can be tied hundreds of ways. The sandals are made from locally sourced materials, including agricultural by-product leather and stunning African fabrics. Sseko uses leather that has been vegetable-tanned as well as recycled rubber whenever possible.
Sseko employs recent secondary school graduates in Uganda to produce these handmade sandals. These women earn money that will go directly towards their university education, helping them achieve their dreams of becoming doctors, lawyers, teachers and leaders. Sseko believes in the power of business to help consumers change the world, one sandal at a time.
Career history / Company history:
Sseko Designs was started in 2008 shortly after it's founder, Liz, completed her graduate studies in corporate social responsibility. While volunteering in Uganda, she recognized the need for young women to find gainful employment after graduating secondary school in order to pay for university. She started Sseko Designs in response to this, believing that the effects of empowering and educating women last far longer and reach far wider than a one-time donation. Sseko now employs 20 young Ugandan women, giving them the opportunity to make their dreams a reality. Sseko sandals are sold in 70 boutiques globally as well as online.
