The space is also being used to exhibit and sell the work of other forward thinking and ethical designers, and to develop educational workshops, starting in the new year. We want the space to show that there are many different approaches to sustainability in fashion and design. On the Today programme on BBC Radio 4 this morning (31.03.09), Stuart Rose the chief executive of Marks & Spencers, gave an interesting insight to what he felt a beneficial consequence of the current economic climate could be. He expressed the belief that the recession would herald the end of the era of disposability, that customers were no longer satisfied with cheap, throwaway fashion.

Clearly there is a responsibility for retailers and designers to ensure their businesses are as socially and environmentally sustainable as possible, but there is also the responsibility for us all, as consumers, to recognise the negative impacts of throwaway fashion and over consumption.

If a result of the credit crunch is people taking stock, and moving away from disposability to durability, and to placing value on products that have integrity or a story behind them, then I agree with Stuart Rose, it has to be a good thing!Girl About Town - Are global retailers really doing enough??tag:ethicalfashionforum.ning.com,2009-03-20:2622461:BlogPost:55902009-03-20T10:29:22.000ZJulia Crewhttp://ethicalfashionforum.ning.com/profile/julia_c
It does seem now that more of these retailers are responding to the growing concern of how clothes are made and are engaging with the issues - for instance Tesco representatives have attended Ethical Fashion Forum events, and an Asda representative was on the panel at the recent Fashioning an Ethical Industry conference. But the emphasis of this report is asking whether enough is being done, are benefits actually reaching the workers?

Addressing purchasing practices is one of the key issues included in the CCC’s recommendations for the retailers. Feedback from the last event told us how useful it was to meet with suppliers face-to-face, talk with them and see what they have to offer. So we have built on this key feature of the evening, increasing the number of people exhibiting, to create an 'Ethical Sourcing Marketplace'. This will showcase materials suppliers, manufacturers and ethical fashion organisations, allowing attendants at the event to network and make contacts with those people who can help you to source more sustainably across your supply chain.

This event is taking place on Tuesday March 17th, at the Rich Mix in East London, from 6 - 8.30pm. More information on this seminar, and other events in this series can be found on the events section of this site.

The Ethical Fashion Forum were proud to be showcasing the work of three fantastic designers: Izzy Lane, the New Designer of the Year winner from Novembers RE:fashion awards, and the two winners of the EFF Innovation award, MIA and Christopher Raeburn.

Izzy Lane produces beautiful, ethically made garments many of which are made from wool coming from their own rare breed sheep, most of which were saved from needless slaughter. The range includes knitwear, handknitted by their network of over 100 knitters across the Dales, coats and jackets manufactured in Wales and skirts manufactured in the Lake District.
Izzy Lane are determined to support the British fashion industry and their supply chain includes the last remaining 51 spinners in Calderdale, one of the last dye-houses in Bradford and the last mother-of-pearl button maker in the UK.
MIA by Mia Nisbet fuses recycled fabrics and traditional Malawian textiles to produce a collection that combines the richness of African textiles with western styling.
With the influx of cheap, imported second hand clothing flooding the street markets of Malawi, it has been made very difficult for locally produced clothing to compete in the local market.
MIA works with producers in Malawi to create ranges which turn this challenge into an opportunity. Collections are designed and marketed to an international fashion market. Profits are reinvested in communities in Malawi, as well as in the training, equipment and infrastructure needed to increase market access and create sustainable livelihoods.
Christopher Raeburn is founder and director of Raeburn – a men’s and womenswear label that focuses on functional beauty in the 21st century cityscape.
Christopher uses fabrics from de-commissioned European military stock to create garments that are original in design and address the needs and concerns of a forward-thinking modern society.
Recycling, intelligent use of materials, reducing packaging, energy use and impact on the environment are an important part of the Raeburn philosophy.
Raeburn clothing is REMADE in England. The label aims to rejuvenate and support what remains of the UK’s skilled garment production sector – all collections are made in East London.
Last night things kicked off with Ada Zanditon's first show for London Fashion Week, at Divo in Picadilly. Zanditon has already shown collections in China and at Paris Ethical Fashion Week, where she won the award for creativity, and her new Autumn/Winter 09 collection did not disappoint. Sculptured, geometric silhouettes combined with a body-con aesthetic to create a range with a high-end edge, with something to appeal to a wide range of tastes. Zanditon uses traditional, UK sourced materials supplemented with organic and fairtrade fabrics. For those of us in the UK, we saw much of the country transformed into a winter wonderland earlier this week. Inevitably there was an outcry at the country's inability to cope with a few inches of snow, as road, rail and airline travel ground to a halt. But I say we should embrace the occassional day when you can pause for a while, and join in the collective enthusiasm for something as simple as snow!

And speaking of transport...figures showed that London air pollution plummeted along with the temperatures. With empty roads and skies, scientists at King's College London who manage the London Air Quality Network measured large drops in the levels of air pollution. For example, nitrogen oxide fell from 110 parts per billion (on a regular Monday) to only 15 parts per billion on Monday 2nd February (for the full Guardian report follow this link).

So although not directly relating to fashion, anything that makes us realise how our everyday lives affects the planet and the environment we live in has to be a good thing. Maybe we can all make the effort to have a 'snow day' more often - there doesn't necessarily have to be snow, but walk instead of taking the bus, cycle instead of jumping in the car, and talk a moment to appreciate the small things in life!Girl About Town - London Fashion Weektag:ethicalfashionforum.ning.com,2009-01-29:2622461:BlogPost:15342009-01-29T15:14:26.000ZJulia Crewhttp://ethicalfashionforum.ning.com/profile/julia_c

With the recent accusations against Primark using sweat shop labour here in the UK, despite being a member of the Ethical Trading Initiative, the trust between consumers and retailers is at an all time low.
If you're fed up of feeling powerless to change this situation, the Environmental Justice Foundation offers the opportunity of opening up a dialogue with some major high street retailers, including H&M, Monsoon and Topshop. By sending an email straight to the top, you can demand to know that they are committed to ethics and the environment! If retailers are constantly questioned by us, the consumer, they will be forced to take responsibility. So take action!
