Buying Eco Friendly Fabrics is More Expensive!

Well the answer to this is a little bit yes and a big NO!

I’m not going to pretend that ethical and organic fabrics are the cheapest fabrics ever made, because to pay the producers a fair wage they simply won’t ever be as cheap as chips. But we think you’ll be surprised at how low organic fabric suppliers can keep their prices compared to other fabric big name fabric suppliers!

Besides the warm and fuzzy feeling you have knowing they’ve been sourced 100% ethically, crucially, with ethical textiles such as Organic and Fairtrade fabrics (no, these are NOT the same thing – which I will go into in my second “eco fabric myth busting” article next week), there is also a whole lot of craftsmanship involved and getting what you pay for. I see it all the time – sure you can get your £1/metre fabric, but it’ll be a cheap and nasty viscose poly blend – and who on EARTH wants to wear or be anywhere near that?! Yuck. No thank you. We want to give you hand woven fabrics that have been hand spun and beautifully crafted by amazing artisans. And if they aren’t made by artisans, but made in an Industrial factory instead (SA 8000 certified of course!) then you still get a fibre that’s saved lives and a great quality fabric too.

This is exactly the same fabric sold for nearly twice the price!

Ok, so a lot of us hate online shopping for fabrics, but with high street giants going out of business, it really is the smart move! With online organic fabric stores like us, our processes are much more streamlined and we don’t have the hefty overheads that normal shops do . ‘…Why do I care?’ I hear you cry! Well, I’ll tell you why using a great example of these fabrics above. As you can see, they are exactly the same fabric, but as an online shop we can afford to sell it a little lower (well a LOT actually) than if we had a shop, and we can pass those savings on to our customers!

Conclusion

With just four examples, I’ve obviously only just scratched the surface here!

But if this doesn’t convince you, you can save even more money by checking out Reclaimed Fabrics! You can pick up beautiful, end-of-rolls and off-cuts at jaw-dropping prices (although watch out if you’re making samples and will need to pick up more metres later - chances are, there won’t be any left). But the “eco” point behind reclaiming fabrics is to divert them from landfill – where they just sit and rot and all those nasty chemicals used to create them (blooming NON ORGANIC FABRICS!) seep into the ground and contaminate water supplies AND contribute to greenhouse gases. Urgh.

Hopefully you now see how being ethical in your fabric choices doesn’t always break the bank! If you liked this article, I’d love if you’d sign up for our mailing list and I’ll keep you up to date about any future articles.

During Graduate Fashion Week we talked to eight budding eco fashion design students from London, New Zealand and India, to find out how easy “being ethical” actually is and why so many of our future designers seem so disinterested in saving our planet. There are brave young students who aren’t afraid of tackling ethical issues head on: sticking to their eco principles even if it means adding extra time and effort to their workload. But what is it about “ethical fashion” that has other students running for the hills and what needs to be done to change things?

Are students encouraged to design ethically?

All of the students we spoke to noted that their course contained some element of teaching ethical design principles, even if not all students chose to work “responsibly” after that:

As Amy, a Fashion Design and Technology graduate from Manchester Metropolitan Universitytold us, “My university really encouraged us to look at … [the] growing awareness and concern about sustainability.” .

So it seems that universities and art schools are educating students about the growing public awareness of the environmental and social issues within the fashion industry.

Why, in that case, aren’t more young designers designing responsibly?

There appear to be three key factors at play:

1. Whilst tutors and lecturers are happy to “educate” their students about the issues in theoretical terms, they are less likely to proactively encourage students to adopt eco design principles into their own work. As Valentini, a London College of Fashion graduatecommented, when it came down to the designing “it was more ‘up to you’”.

This reluctance to positively promote “responsible” design seems to stem from a still common misconception that focusing on ethical principles would hinder the creative process:

Laura, a Fashion Design graduate from the University of Plymouth, expressed this herself, “They don’t want students to focus on the ethical production too much to take it away from the designing.” As did Sofia, a Fashion Design Technology graduate from the London College of Fashion, “Ethical fashion has a bad reputation of not really being fashionable.”

2. It can take a lot more effort to source materials:

Valentini picked up on this aspect: “it is much more difficult (in comparison with other fashion products) to find the appropriate leather or fabric.”

And these problems sourcing eco fabrics aren’t exclusive to the UK, even Jane, a Fashion Design & Business graduate from Massey University, New Zealand told us, “There were many times when I was so tired and I just wanted to go down the road and buy fabric from a normal shop. Not slacking off was probably the hardest!”

3. The biggest issue though is that the wider fashion industry is not changing, so why should design students;

Tola, a Fashion Design graduate from the University for the Creative Arts, very perceptively told us, “I’d say it isn’t a focus for all design courses for the same reasons that it sadly isn’t the focus of all fashion practices. People want to make money and they don’t necessarily like the idea of being limited in certain ways.“

Jane from New Zealand agreed, adding, “I guess the reality is that a large portion of graduates will not be working within a sustainably orientated brand.”

So what is the solution?

Keeping It Current

Eco-conscious design students are incredibly perceptive to the fickle nature of fashion and are naturally adapting their designs, to appeal to the mass market. One of the common threads of these budding eco designers’ work, for example, is to address the pre-conceived “hippie” notions of ethical design; getting people to see it “as ‘Fashion’ not just Sustainable Fashion”, asFashion Design and Technology graduate from Manchester Metropolitan University, Amy, puts it.They are achieving this by keeping up with current trends and making items that are as easy or easier to care for than fast fashion items.

Amy’s work doesn’t stop there: “I try to consider how to make my work as accessible as possible whilst being sustainable, for example; using hard wearing organic cottons that are easy to look after and can be washed at low temperatures.”

Similarly, Sofia adapted her designs: “My aim was to create a sustainable collection that wouldn’t look like one and which would be commercially approachable so I tried my best use methods that could be adapted for the fashion market.”

As did Laura, “As an ethical designer I keep up with current trends. Many of the fabrics can be washed; every garment I produce will be completed with washing instructions.”

Sourcing

Inevitably, if eco fabrics are difficult to source, designers will be less likely to bother to use them. Over the past few years, however, companies like Offset Warehouse have started to address that problem, paving the way for young designers to work more responsibly.

A one-stop shop for ethical fabrics and components that can be trusted to have come from ethical and sustainable sources, the company was founded by a former fashion student, after experiencing her own frustrations at trying to source fabrics sustainably. Thanks to companies like Offset Warehouse, it is now easy to get your hands on ethical and sustainable fabrics that are also “student budget friendly”.

“Offset Warehouse are brilliant as they provide clear descriptive information of all products therefore enabling me to share the information with the consumer.” (Laura)

“Offset Warehouse was an invaluable source of fabric for my final collection. The range of fabrics was the most extensive.” (Jane)

“I’ve found newsletters really helpful as they keep you informed about new fabrics and Offset Warehouse provide comprehensive information about the fabrics which is extremely useful but is something not all suppliers provide.” (Amy)

Time for Change?
It is outdated to think that all ethical design is made from ‘hippie hemp’, and Universities claiming “lack of supply” or “high prices” as excuses are no longer acceptable. It is vital that higher education institutions encourage their students to design ethically and sustainably and that young designers are facilitated to continue to do so once they start designing in the commercial world. It should not be left to the students to pave the way for their mentors:

Textile student Sarah, who graduated from Scotland’s Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design commented,“It is becoming more and more popular for students to take it upon themselves to work with sustainable materials so maybe in the near future design courses will follow.” (Sarah)

Fashion designers, journalists, trendsetters and consumers should make a stand and turn all design into ethical design instead of it being an outsider pursuit. The more people who demand it, the easier sourcing materials will become.

“It’s slowly becoming the new luxury I think and people find it more and more impressive to see people’s ingenuity and resourcefulness.” (Tola)

I have always admired beautiful lingerie and aspired to a career that would make a difference. When I learned more about the eco-fashion world I thought this could be translated into beautiful, ethical lingerie.

My project developed over a long period of time but it was on a holiday in Greece when I decided I wanted to do this project and really go for it.

Last year in September we travelled to the island Zakynthos and went to see shipwreck bay and the blue caves. With its green nature, white beaches and clear blue water the island is a true paradise. But the island also has a dark side: Mass tourism, poverty, abandoned buildings and lots of stray animals, and this made me sad and I wanted to do something about it. I realised I could relate my experience on the island with how I feel about the fashion industry: the fashion industry is full of beautiful and desirable products but this industry has also a big dark side. A couple of those things hidden in that dark side are the impact on the environment, the waste it produces, the cruelty of the fur industry and the working conditions of the people who make our clothes.

Before, I didn’t really know why I desired to work in fashion, but that summer I realised I wanted to do something about these problems through fashion.

I started looking into eco-fashion and coupled with my interest in lingerie I developed my idea of an ethical lingerie brand that would be against animal cruelty, to make sure people in the supply chain have good working conditions and fair wages and produce everything in a low impact way for the environment.

The brand Adriëlle intimates emphasises the importance and beauty of fabrics produced without chemicals or pesticides and will allow women to enjoy guilt free shopping. The garments will be locally produced and made out of organic, recycled and low impact materials. The fashion industry is very big and influential and I think if we can make a little difference and start inspire other brands, together we can make a big difference.

The development of the concept was a very time consuming and challenging process. Before I started I did a lot of research into lingerie, retail and consumer trends. I sourced eco-friendly fabrics to create product samples and the main fabrics we ended up using were Charmeuse Satin and Natural draped peace silk from Offset Warehouse.

I sourced eco-friendly bags and gift boxes and of course I also wrote a business plan. I had to collaborate with different people to get product designs and to do a photoshoot so I could create my promotional materials. Even though it got quite stressful towards the deadline, I had a great time working on this project as I was truly passionate about it.

It's a real sigh of relief when we work with designers who stand up and challenge this highly profitable fashion industry, and sacrifice a bit of their profit margin to supporting social improvement and the environment. Ultimately, someone somewhere is paying the price for our cheap throw-away fashion culture. We're proud to support designers who are passionate about social and environmental improvements in the industry... because we are too!!

The United Nations Climate Conference serves as a meeting for political parties all over the world to discuss climate change. With this summer's extreme weather attributed to climate change (http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2012/jul/10/extreme-weather-manmade-climate-change), and in light of the disastrous floods we are seeing here in the UK this week, this year's conference particularly resonates with us.

Just small, daily lifestyle changes soon make for big results when it comes to climate change. We're pleased to be able to help customers make these small changes, by offering ethical fabrics that improve both our environment and the lives of the people who make them.

We're looking forwards to hearing more from the event, and you can find out more here: http://unfccc.int/2860.php

The biggest benefit of Organic cotton is to ensure cotton farmers get fair pay for their work as well as better working standards. Regular Cotton uses pesticides to ensure no nasty pests get on the crops but these pesticides often have harmful toxins that cause the death of around 22,000 cotton farmers each year whereas Organic cotton only uses natural pesticides that are safe for farmers to use whilst still being effective.

It just goes to show that the origin of our clothes is important. Nobody wants to support sweatshops, and labels who are passionate about providing fair wages and offering benefits to the people who create them are first choice to responsible folk like MPs and Royalty. If the Royals can spare a little time to show support for a fairer and more ethical fashion industry, then we certainly can!

Wool week, running from the 15th - 20th October, is a campaign to support local farmers and small business whose livelihood depends on the wool industry. Since its launch, the price that farmers now get for their wool has increased. But the wool war is far from won yet.

Wool is so eco friendly it's boarding on bonkers: it's natural, biodegradable, renewable and sustainable. It's brilliantly versatile and can be used for textile manufactures, carpeting, interiors and fashion and design.

To celebrate wool week, we've decided to slash our most popular wool prices - take a look for yourself: www.offsetwarehouse.com/wool.
