As we start 2012, to help you make your wardrobe sustainable, we launch the 12 Rules To Dress By Poster and Wardrobe Shopping Checklist!

I have been following these Rules To Dress By since 2008 when I started working in the Ethical Fashion industry as part of the team on the RE:Fashion Awards, and then later for the Ethical Fashion Forum as a project manager and then associate director. I wanted to live out my values everyday, I couldn't spend my life talking about ethical fashion and not be an example of it. Before 2008, I had thought about what I wore, I didn't want to look like everyone else, so was a big supporter of independent designers and chose to match up these pieces with simple things from the high street. I didn't think I bought that much, but that was a lie. I loved shopping, and would not have liked to count how much I bought. I wouldn't be surprised if it was over 20 things a month. When I made the decision to take a really sustainable approach to my wardrobe, I basically slowed the whole thing down, spending more time thinking about what I wanted or needed in my wardrobe, spending more time discovering the incredible stories behind the clothes and this whole process made them human and special again.

Even though our awareness is rising about the issues in the global fashion industry most of us don’t have a clue how to think about making our wardrobes sustainable. When I speak to friends and colleagues there doesn’t seem to be a great feeling of responsibility about how we shop and how we dress. Many feel that it’s a girl’s fashion issue, yet we all wear clothes no matter our sex, age, or how stylish we consider ourselves.

The responsibility to change fashion is shared between the fashion industry, governments and us. What we buy or demand makes an enormous difference to what is made. There is a whole vocabulary building up around ethical fashion, with phrases such as Pre-Loved, Up-Cycled, Organic and Fair-trade. It’s important that we all start to understand what these mean and this is the future of fashion.

I wanted to help to share these ideas, and so collaborated with Visual Communication Designer Joana Casaca Lemos to develop a poster and checklist that would make it impossible for you not to think about what you buy and what you wear. As the fashion industry is now so global, we thought it was important to develop this project into as many languages as we could, so that the message could be spread far and wide. This has not been without challenge, especially with the new vocabulary on this topic, but we hope that you share and enjoy our work. We are making it freely available so that nobody is prevented from joining in. The rules and checklist are designed to be realistic to the way that we shop, and to give us some motivation to change our ways. Our aim is to make 2012 the Year of The Sustainable Wardrobe, with each of us becoming conscious consumers and demanding that the fashion industry is changed.

Clothes are an important part of our daily life. We have the opportunity to affect millions of people’s lives and to protect our environment by how we shop and what we wear. Rules are made to be broken, but by following these you can make a difference.

We live in a world where we sometimes expect the decisions about our future to be made for us. Politics isn’t just something that happens in the houses of parliament and voting doesn’t just happen every four years. We express the future that we choose through how we spend our money, time and energy. Every day we make choices that shape our world.

If it was up to you to create the world that you want to live in, what would it be?
My Prediction:

Amisha Ghadiali, Associate Director of Ethical Fashion Forum & Designer/Founder of Amisha Jewellery

The last decade showed us that we could have it all when it comes to fashion, and then took that away from us as our economy changed. I think that this has led to a higher consciousness of how people think about our planet and our choices. The rate of interest from the consumer in eco-fashion is growing, and this is being matched by standards and innovation in the industry.

More and more big retailers are showing an interest in going green, and improving their production methods. Eco-Sourcing and research is becoming easier and easier, allowing an increased number of new designers to enter the scene. This will be even more prevalent through this year.

I am looking forward to increased collaboration in the industry through the Ethical Fashion Forum between suppliers, designers, retailers and buyers.

I predict that by the end of 2010, everyone will have a few pieces of eco fashion in their wardrobes, whether it be upcycled, organic, fairly traded or animal friendly. I am also hoping to see a lot more Eco-Fashion walk up the red carpet...Happy Holidays from Daisy de Villeneuve and the EFFtag:ethicalfashionforum.ning.com,2009-12-22:2622461:BlogPost:335202009-12-22T12:33:13.000ZAmisha Ghadialihttp://ethicalfashionforum.ning.com/profile/AmishaGhadiali
‘RECLAIM’, an exhibition created by a meeting of minds at different ends of the design spectrum, Orsola de Castro & John Teall.

Orsola de Castro, founder of recycled fashion label From Somewhere, curator of Estethica at London Fashion Week, and EFF Board member, and John Teall, graduate of the Chelsea Art Collage & UK based interior & furniture designer, have collaborated to create some unique and innovative pieces to celebrate London Design Festival.

De Castro and Teall 20 pieces from the lost luggage auction at Heathrow Airport. Without knowing what was inside each suitcase, their challenge was to produce an item from whatever mixed textiles they came across.

One of Teall’s creations is a unique bedspread from the entire contents of one of the unclaimed bags. The idea was to create the appearance of strewn clothes across a bed, as if casually emptied straight from the bag. Capturing the essence of that singular individual, allowing the new owner of the piece the opportunity to take a voyeuristic look into the life of the past owner.

Teall explains his thoughts on the project,
‘When Orsola and I first met, with the bags which we bought back from the auction house, it was a very strange mix of emotions all round. In many ways it felt intrusive and almost illegal to be prying through the belongings of someone else. There were moments of disgust as we came across dirty underwear, and unwashed socks, yet also moments of excitement as we came across beautiful pieces of fabric and costume jewellery.’

De Castro has created, among other things an extremely unique wedding dress, mapping the interesting journey from the initial trepidation to be invading people’s luggage, to the feelings of guilt & and even reminders of death. The idea was to take all the items with variations of white and create an explosive gown that took all these elements of people’s lives from all over the world, all their history, and stories and create a new life for them that was about celebrating life and love.

Both designers have a different take on the form of recycling, provoking a whole range of thoughts from perceptions on aesthetics and design to the wealth of personal history involved in their loss and possible back-story to the original owners.

The exhibition takes place at Eco-Age, the West London shop established by Nicola Giuggioli, Livia Firth, Colin Firth and Ivo Coulson in 2007.

Nicola Giuggioli, CEO Eco Age was behind the initial idea of RECLAIM and explains the thinking behind the collaboration,
'When we were thinking of how to create a project that could represent Eco and its different activities at the London Design Festival, the association of John's and Orsola's work came as a natural answer of our aim - to show how fashion, design, and creativity are the key to drastically changing the consumers perception towards green and sustainable products.
The idea to get Orsola & John to meet in lost luggage is representative of the misconception of our times for the value of the products we forget about. I wonder about what would happen if the actual owner of one of those suitcases showed up at the shop and recognized his or her belongings in the new creations… I hope I will have the chance to see the reaction!’

The Reclaim exhibition is taking place until 27th September 2009, so head to Eco Age at 213 Chiswick High Road, London, W4 2DW.12 Degrees of Fashiontag:ethicalfashionforum.ning.com,2009-09-29:2622461:BlogPost:263612009-09-29T19:36:20.000ZAmisha Ghadialihttp://ethicalfashionforum.ning.com/profile/AmishaGhadiali
Pop-Ups; the latest trend to sweep our streets. Restaurants, bars, clubs and shops that appear in unexpected locations only to disappear just as you find out about them. It’s a perfect concept for our hype-heavy society. It means that the owners of these businesses can take risks, appearing in dangerous locations or with a strange theme or twist. They don’t need to be perfect, so don’t need as much investment which makes them perfect for this financial climate. They open knowing that they won’t be the hottest new thing for long, and accepting that soon we will be craving something different.

The Fashion industry is using this latest craze as a way to bring to life what they have to offer.

When you are out looking for Ethical Fashion on the high street, you will notice that it is pretty hard to find. This is because most ethical fashion brands are small businesses, with extra costs given that they are in many cases buying more expensive fabrics and paying more for production then their competitors.

As a result the internet has become the best place to do your ethical fashion shopping. With most brands having their own online shop, and boutiques such as Ascension it is easy to find great ethical fashion online.

Recently there has been a surge of pop-up boutiques dedicated to showcasing ethical fashion, and allowing the consumer to actually feel and try on some of the items that they have been coveting through the web.

I met with four women who together have put their unique spin on the pop-up shop and used it as a way to get people talking about ethical fashion. Journalist Lucy Siegle, Designer Orsola de Castro, Ethical Fashion Expert Jocelyn Whipple and Film Producer Livia Firth. After many meetings discussing how to make ethical and sustainable fashion accessible and affordable, they hit on the idea of “12 Degrees of Ethical Fashion.” Set in Eco-Age, Chiswick, the shop Livia owns with her husband Colin Firth, they set about showcasing 12 different types of ethical fashion for only a month each. Over the year they take us through amazing ethical collections covering everything from beach wear to menswear to party dresses.

This way they could create a buzz around each different theme with a special event inviting people to come for drinks or a professional fitting, and support a range of different designers in the process. The events can be anything from a masterclass in getting the right fit in organic denim to an expert workshop on how to extend the lifespan of your favourite clothes.

This great initiative really demonstrates what sustainable fashion is all about, and allows people to be introduced slowly to the terminology, designers and issues that the label covers. It forces you to think about what you are buying and why.

“Nowadays unfortunately it has become so consumeristic and silly: the high street shops bombard you with constantly new pieces, incredibly low prices, and you become like a drug addict,” observes Livia, “You don't buy something because you need it or because you actually and truly love it, but just because "it's there and it's cheap and I might as well
add it to my wardrobe just in case"!”

This gets to the heart of 12 degrees, it is about offering women a solution to this problem. Just buy one or two really nice things that you can wear anywhere and forever. It’s about making us think more about where our clothes come from, who made them, how did they get here? Ethical Fashion is all about the story behind the piece. From the drawing board, to the cotton farm, to the shop.

On the timing of 12 Degrees, Lucy said “Why now? We were frankly worried about where a global downturn leaves a fledgling independent ethical fashion design brand. There are three schools of thought come recession: everyone will flee to Primark et al, consumers will buy nothing (unlikely given rates of fashion consumption) and consumers will want trans-seasonal pieces that will last made from good quality fibres that they can treasure and keep.”

The stunt involves 50 people dressed as Trees parading around London for the day. The Trees will travel around iconic London locations, doing a variety of performances and ending the day in front the Barbican where there will be a massive finale event with celebrity artists and environmental figureheads.

The Eco - PR stunt will receive heavy press coverage on the day with CNN, Green TV as well as a major London radio station and daily paper already interested in running features. An on-the-day camera crew and photographer will be recording footage, uploading to the website and creating a viral film which will be released after the event. Throughout the day millions of people are expected to see the Trees.

The stunt will take place on the 26th of June, so the costumer should be finished and ready to go on the 24th.

Heavy environmental emphasis will put throughout the project, especially with regards to the costumes with the high desirability to use recycled, re-used and reclaimed materials.

The selection of a designer is going to take place urgently, ideally this week even, so anyone interested in the project should get in contact immediately.
This masterclass looks in more depth at the issues covered in the Sourcing from Co-operatives seminar, in April. Small co-operatives all over the world are producing fashion and textile products to high standards. Thanks to all of you who attended our last Fashion+ event, on the 20th January, the first in a series focusing on sourcing sustainable fabrics and components.
The evening’s speakers included Abi Rushton, head of sustainable and ethical sourcing at Tesco, Kirsten Samuel from MUMO, a sustainable materials supplier, and Ben Ramsden, founder of Pants to Poverty and Zameen.
The discussions highlighted the importance of supply chain traceability and accountability, and steps that are being taken to address this by the fashion industry across all sectors ranging from supermarkets, high end luxury designers and new fashion business start-ups.
The evening raised some important questions on the practicalities and realities of sourcing sustainably for businesses and designers, and was a great opportunity for people to network and meet face to face with suppliers of sustainable materials.

If you missed it and want to download the notes from the session - please join our group "Spotlight on Sourcing" and go to the discussion forum.
