About me / About business or organisation:
my name is kestrel. i am from a tiny little town on the mississippi river in wisconsin.

i have been a fashion addict from a young age...creating outstanding and eye-widening outfits since my toddler years, i have forever had fashion in my heart.

after earning a degree in global studies, international journalism, and women's studies, my interests and passions merged into one strong reverence -- fair trade fashion.

i was fortunate enough to grab an internship with fair trade fashion pioneer: people tree in london in the spring of 2008.

following this inspiring journey, fair trade fashion has simply become an integrative element in the web of all things kestrel.

i maintain the conviction that fair trade clothing must be fashionable to make its way into the mainstream. i respect the companies that are truly working and collaborating and connecting the dots to create fashion-forward pieces and collections in an ecologically, sustainable, and people-friendly way.

i also respect fashion that is re:made or re:cycled.

i am honest and i share my opinion. i am open and i like to listen. i continue to challenge my patience.

"ethical fashion" is my mantra.
Career history / Company history:
Currently, I work with Ecouterre.com and Inhabitat.com, with a primary focus on business development and eco/ethical fashion editorial. Additionally, I work as a content producer for FashionMeGreen and FashioningChange and I've consulted for TheGreenShows and Global Action Through Fashion in the past.

Working with founder Safia Minney and PR Manager Antony Waller of People Tree in London, was what truly inspired my drive to be a part of the Fair Trade/Ethical Fashion World.

Previously, during my studies at Hamline University, I lived and worked in Valdivia, Chile to conduct an internship with the newspaper, El Diario Austral.

In addition, I lived and worked in Madrid, Spain during the 2008-2009 school year, teaching English to elementary school students. These experiences contributed massively to my language capabilities and abilities to adjust to and learn from different cultural environments.

Hello there Kes,
Namaste from Nepal! I just wanted to drop you a line about our company, 'Heaven Hemp' here in Kathmandu which I run with my (British) wife. I've been working here in Nepal since 2002 when I set up my own workshop (we have a permanent team of 8) to design manufacture and export ethically produced natural fibre goods - wild hemp, wild nettle, banana, peace silk, wool and bamboo.
We now export clothes, accessories, homeware, fabric and yarn to the UK, Norway, the US, Japan and India. As well as using power-loomed natural fibre blends for our clothes, we also source wild hemp and wild nettle yarn and fabric (naturally organic) from farming families in the hills who hand-spin the yarn and hand-weave it on small looms. We have also just started to design and make our own handloomed fabrics too.
You can see some of our products at www.wildweaves.co.uk, including the new ‘balika’ range of kids' clothes which Rosie (my wife) designed (and my kids modelled!) The site www.heavenhemp.co.uk is our wholesale catalogue. We are trying to spread the word about what we do to create interest in our products, create jobs, and to keep the tradition of hand spun yarn and hand loomed cloth alive in Nepal.

Please drop me a line if I can tell you anything more,

Take care
Udaya
