I am involved in developing the eco textile value chain in South Africa, and work primarily with students and emerging designers - assisting their sassy sustainable development.

I launched the Natural & Organic Show in South Africa 7 years ago, which has grown to attract an audience of more than 25000 over a three day period.

I've recently followed my love to Malmö and am establishing Global Green Agency to facilitate links in the environmental and cleaner technology sectors.

    Hi Janine, you might be interested to know that the South Africa tartan will be launched at a televised ceremony on Table Mountain on 16th December in front of several national and international dignitaries. A pre_World Cup all-African show is planned for June and young designers are welcome

    Hi Janine, the tartan(s) (there are now 22 African tartans) will be woven in both wool and mohair in South Africa. In due course they will be woven in cotton in each respective country where it is ecologically sensible to do so (cotton grown in the wrong climate can be disastrous for the water supply). The vast majority of finished goods will be made in Africa.
    The whole process from shearing to finished cloth is organic in that it is wholly natural and without the use of any pollutants. It is the most ethical product I know in that it creates employment at fair wages where unemploymnt is high but also ensures that a share of the profits are retained by the producers for investment and attempts to overcome tribalism. That is why Tutu,de Klerk and Mandela will be on Table Mountain along with governmenmt and provincial minisaters and celebrities on the16th December.
    Each tartan design is registered and accepted by each respective government as a new national/international symbol and is also made in the form of wrapping paper, stationery etc as part of a worldwide 'branding'.

    By the way a percentage of the profits from sales of the Swedish tartan already goes to support humanitarian projects in Africa. In due course it too will be woven in South Africa.

    Hi Janine. Great to hear from you again. I trust that you are having a great time abroad and that the weather there is much better than our local weather. How are you doing? I cannot imagine how active you must have been since you left SA. What are your future plans and are there any similarities between our and Sweden's clothing and textile industry?
