Hi All,

I'm having a clear out (as i'm going away in August) and getting rid of loads of fabric which includes many different fabrics/colours/patterns there are mostly large pieces over a few metres as well as smaller pieces under a metre. It so far comes to 4 large plastic boxes but i haven't finished yet.

I would like to see it go to a good cause rather than try to sell it as I know there are so many worthwhile projects going on who could do something…

If you feel this is you, please send me an email and let me know how you would benefit from this. I am based in London so this probably really applies to those also based in the London area unless you can travel to collect.

So you’re committed to sourcing ethical raw materials for your collections – you’ve tried organic cotton, hemp, natural dyes, bamboo, fair trade cotton, but what about recycling? Using offcuts, cloth sample books, ends of rolls and even trimmings discarded by factories means they don’t end up in landfill. UK brands such as From Somewhere recycle old garments, off cuts and ends of rolls, and Junky Styling transform old clothing into new, but how about sourcing would-be waste materials further afield? If you manufacture in India, or would like to source in India, you might be interested in checking out the Seelampur waste cloth markets in north east Delhi – where you can find almost any kind of cloth imaginable, and even buy by the kilo – an added bonus, as it’s far cheaper than buying by the metre. Extract taken from the SOURCE Article.

Some textile recycling units such as LMB allow designers to buy bags of second hand clothes, but as the demand grows for textile waste how will this be managed? The Seelampur waste cloth markets (above) seem to have a very sophisticated process in place, and at the same time the people doing the sorting and selling are making a living out of it.

It would be interesting to hear where other people get their textile waste from and how they deal with issues such as quality and consistency.

Asos, the web-based fashion retailer, is to launch an online
market-place that will allow its customers to trade their unwanted
clothes on its site.

As well as enabling its customers to recycle their wardrobes, Asos says
the new feature will make for more environmentally friendly shopping.

Asos is the UK’s largest independent online fashion retailer offering
around 25,000 branded and own label fashion lines across the
womenswear, menswear, footwear, accessories, jewellery and beauty
sectors. Its main target market is the 16-34 year old bracket and,
attracting over 7.5 million unique visitors a month, the potential
volume of recycled clothes available could divert thousands of items
from ending up in landfill.

As well as individual customers, the recycling market-place will be
open to independent retailers who will go through a vetting process to
check their credibility. Under the terms of the scheme, Asos will not
allow individuals to re-sell luxury goods to avoid any counterfeiting
issues. The company will also employ security checks to protect
customers and prices will be fixed. “We have 7.5 million fashion-loving
customers coming to the Asos website every month and I want them to be
able to recycle their wardrobes among each other,” Asos chief executive
Nick Robertson told the UK’s Financial Times.

According to a report by Verdict, the percentage of clothing bought
online in the UK is expected to double in the next three to four years,
from 5.7% at the end of 2008 to over 11% by 2013. The latest statistics
suggest that one million tonnes of clothing in the UK is destined for
landfill sites each year.

Cork on a roll for upholstery and bags, cloth backed in the UK?tag:ethicalfashionforum.ning.com,2009-10-23:2622461:Topic:286422009-10-23T09:35:04.597Zemma mcginnhttp://ethicalfashionforum.ning.com/profile/emmamcginn
This isn't strictly recycled but it's pretty green: has anyone seen this kind of cork upholstery fabric, sometimes called cork leather by the meter in the UK? If not, does anyone want to split a 25m roll? It's abrasion resistant, washable to 30 degrees but not breathable.

Located in Los Angeles, there are many high-end designers who are looking to turn their factories into zero-waste companies. The fashion world creates so much waste and we want to change that in one simple way - repurposing scraps and remnants. Was wondering what your thoughts are on this and if you think there would be a need for remnant high-end silks and cottons. We could sell in bags assorted by colors or misc. varieties, possibly ranging from $5-$25/per bag. These are all very high-end…
