Hi everyone, I just thought to introduce myself to everyone at EFF and maybe ramble a bit. I'm Honey Wong, I just started my first business using my talent for sewing called Honey Handbags or
honeyhandbags.com. I'm not trained in fashion like most of you. I was taught to sew by my mother who worked in textile mills until she graduated and became an English teacher. Presently I am studying to be a make-up artist in my home country of Formosa or Taiwan to the uninitiated.
I'm probably one of very few in my country that has even begun to use ethical practices within fashion. Eco awareness is a little slow in Taiwan, Taiwan sadly is country that doesn't regulate businesses and corporations very often. Most of my governments legislation is aimed at economic growth. I guess you could say all of our legislation is aimed at the economy while our livelihoods are reduced to nothing.
One of the issues that I feel strongly about is the gentrification of Taiwanese aboriginals. I've decided to take the issue head on! I'm formulating a plan of direct action to help the tribes of Formosa. I will help support this plan with a percentage of the sales of my handbags.
There aren't many charities or groups to help the ancient tribes of Formosa, so it may take a while to put a plan together. You can read more about the slow death of my people
here.
So far the plan is to take weekend trips to video, photograph and interview the ancients of my island and then share what I learn with as many people as possible on
my website.
If you think you might be able to help with this plan or your just interested please
contact me. I need all the help I can get! :)
