Fashion victims: Making style sustainable - A conference for schools and colleges

Speakers from 10:00 to 3:30, followed by re-fashioning clothes workshop until 4:30 (to be confirmed).

Fashion Victims is a conference for school and college students and teachers from textiles, art, design, technology, business studies, economics and geography departments, mainly around the South West.

You'll find out more about organic textiles, fair trade and garment workers' rights and meet the people making our clothes. Teachers will also get ideas for teaching about these issues in the future.

Millions of people are employed in garment factories around the world, and millions of people like us wear these clothes, unaware of how these products reached us. We are sold the idea that we can have cheap clothes and expect that the people making them are getting a fair deal. The truth is that faster and cheaper clothes often lead to abuse and exploitation of people and the planet. When money is tight cheap clothes offers you a chance to make cash go further. But for most, the fast fashion phenomenon tempts us to buy more than we need for as little as we can, which neither workers nor the planet can afford. This needs to change.
Do something about it. Find out why and how at the Fashion Victims conference.

All students must be accompanied by a teacher/lecturer.

Large groups (15 or more) by prior arrangement only.

The event is free to attend, but a cancellation fee of £10 per person will be charged if you fail to turn up without letting us know at least 2 days in advance.

Lunch is not provided but Fairtrade and organic snacks will be available.

Organised by Fashioning an Ethical Industry (Labour Behind the Label) and the Cotton On team: Soil Association, Bristol Fair Trade Network, Bishopston Trading Company and hosted by the University of West England.
